All Is Quiet On New Year's Day

Sunday, January 1, 2006

It's 3:15 AM at the moment on New Year's Day and I'm still on a major sugar high. I've been on a sugar high all day. You see, I normally don't eat anything that contains sugar. Well, except the natural sugars in fruits and stuff, but added sugars and all kinds of artificial sugar are a no-no. I used to be fat, eat way too much and always go for the bad foods, but those days are over. For over a year now I'm healthy, eating healthy food, in healthy proportions and doing healthy, regular exercise. But not on New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve is the one day in the year I allow myself to eat anything with reckless abandon. So, one of the first things I did when I got up today, is bake a butter cake. I don't know if they have butter cake in your country, so I'll give a quick recipe. You take sugar, butter and flour in approximately 1:1:1 proportions, you mix them and then put everything in the oven for about 25 minutes. Oh, make sure you get real cream butter and not margarine or some low-fat surrogate stuff; it's New Year's Eve, after all!

Then, while the butter cake was in the oven, I started working on a cheese cake. Towards the evening, I also made something called oliebollen, which is a typically Dutch treat, traditionally served on New Year's Eve. It's basically a deep-fried ball of sweetened dough with raisins and it tastes delicious. I also bought a couple of cheeses (I like the really moudly ones) and a lot of cranberry pâté.

There is still some butter cake left, but the cheese cake is all gone and I'm finishing the cheese and the pâté as I type this. I estimate that I made about forty to fifty oliebollen and, with a little help from my friends, half of them are gone now. My friends are all off to bed, but I'm really not tired. As I said, I'm on a major sugar high. It seems like I don't have any less energy now than I normally have during the day. That might be something to worry about, is it not? Oh well, I don't feel like worrying at the moment, I feel like celebrating and singing, And eating, of course.

The party is over, though. People are sound asleep. There is even someone sleeping in my living room, so I can't sneak downstairs for another piece of butter cake or another oliebol. So I'm sitting behind my computer, blogging. And when I'm done doing that I might work a bit on some changes I want to make to my personal web site.

Maybe it's just as well. I've had enough sugar (and animal fats) in the past few hours to last me through an entire year. Tomorrow, it's back to a healthy diet: no sweet stuff, no cheeses (oh, those delicious cheese). And, although I probably won't really miss the unhealthy foods I ate today, I suspect that one year from now, on New Year's Eve 2007 at about 3:15 AM, I'll be up, on a major sugar high again.

Happy New Year, everybody!
