Starting Out

Tuesday, October 12, 2004

At the beginning of this year I decided that I wanted to get into shareware game development. Since then I have been reading and thinking a lot about the shareware business and I joined the Association of Shareware Professionals.

I set a goal for myself: at the end of the year I want to publish my first game. Well, the end of the year is nearing and there is still a lot to be done.

If there is one thing that I picked up from the books and articles I have read, it is that my first game won't succeed financially. So instead of aiming for the money right away, I'll be aiming for experience. I deliberately came up with a game that is not too hard to write. It's original, though, and it allows for plenty of extension.

My guess is that the skills I need to develop the most are shareware marketing and how to get return customers. I have given both subjects a lot of thought and have come up with ways to experiment with them. I'll blog about that in due time.
