PyWeek Game Programming Competition

Saturday, August 27, 2005

Just wanted to let you know that the PyWeek Game Programming Competition starts this weekend. I'm very busy doing contract work at the moment (hence the lack of blog entries recently), so I don't think I actually have time to learn Python, come up with a game design and do the programming, art, sound and music. On the other hand, it sounds like so much fun that I might not be able to resist. :-)

Someone recently told me that I should look into Python and mentioned that competition. I've got a fairly full plate at the moment, but I think I will look into Python in the coming month.

From what I've seen and done with it so far, it's a fine language indeed. I find it easier to program in than C#, let alone C++. The libraries that come with Python are excellent and there are lots of community-supported libraries available on the internet. As a bonus, your Python-code is instantly cross-platform.

The beauty of Python is that you don't have to learn it -- you can just absorb the language by osmosis while listening to your choice of relaxing music and being fed grapes. Well, almost. Our use of Python has saved us countless hours in developing applications and (especially) support utilities. The language is elegant, and the add-on libraries make it particular powerful.

Well, I wouldn't call the language elegant. Lua is elegant. :-) Python is just so bloody usable. ;-) By the way, if you're wondering: I did the sensible thing and didn't participate. One of these days, though... :-p
