Why I Like Yellow Wood Studios Better Than Disney
Monday, June 6, 2005
For the last couple of days, I've been gripped by the book DisneyWar written by James Stewart. The book is lengthy, but I enjoyed every bit of it. It reads like a real-life version of The Godfather, but in a corporate setting. Business politics, broken promises, bruised egos; it's high-quality drama.
Just about every animated movie from The Little Mermaid to The Incredibles is discussed in the book. You get lots of background information about movies like The Sixth Sense, Pearl Harbor, The Pirates Of The Carribean and Fahrenheit 911. The book also features 'cameo appearances' by numerous famous people: Steven Spielberg, Bruce Willis, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Elton John, to name a few.
I found it fascinating to read about the entertainment business on the other side of the scale. Although I didn't need it, it served as a reminder why I don't want to work for such a large company. Disney may very well employ some of the most creative people in the business, but without the freedom to exercise their creativity, these people will have a hard time doing what they do best.
It's good to be independent. :-)
