The Dexterity Of Steve Pavlina

Tuesday, February 1, 2005

A while ago I marvelled at the simplicity with which Steve Pavlina found out about the blogs of fellow shareware developers. He simply posted a question in an Assocation of Shareware Professionals newsgroup: does anyone here have a blog?

At the time I just thought he was smart enough to take the most effective route to learning about other people's web logs, but today I suddenly realised that he may have been even smarter than I originally thought. You see, Steve left the shareware business in pursuit of other interests. He already knew he would at the time he posted his question. As a matter of fact, he had just started his blog as part of his new endeavour.

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that he wasn't trying to learn about other people's blogs at all; he wanted to tell other people about his! Not only did he come up with a brilliant way of achieving this, he helped many a shareware developer get his or her blog known to their peers. I know I got my first couple of readers because of that thread.

Steve Pavlina continues to be an inspiration. If he's not careful, I might even start admiring him. ;-)

James Jeffers says:

Yeah, nothing like a little sly duplicity to promote yourself. There's a fine line between "getting the word out" and "being obnoxious." Steve, like so many of the self-help/self-improvement gurus, stepped on that line a long time ago.
